This is a composite image. It was taken just before sunrise on New Year's Eve. I took two shots, 30 seconds apart, one of the moon and one of the swans. It was quite dark. Both shots were taken with a Canon XTi 400mm f5.6L at ISO 1600, f5.6, 1/1000s for the moon and 1/640s for the swans. I kept the size relationships the same, both images were from a full frame (no crop). I don't believe I could have taken this with a single shot and kept the images in focus, because of the limited depth of field of the 400.

You are right about the dof Terry I like the idea Could only wish you had the same light on the last couple of birds and avoided the overlap Cool image !!!

Hi Terry,

I have done my share of composing images with the moon in focus.
Since the technology of lenses does not allow us to capture what our eyes see, I don't have a problem doing that.

I would run it through more noise reduction, sky looks a bit noisy from lifting the exposure.

Welcome eto Out of the Box, looking forward to more :)

Thanks very much for the helpful comments! I have attached a reduced noise version, for comparison. Living in the Seattle region, we have to deal with a lot of darkness - so ISO 1600 or more is common, resulting in more noise - which I have gotten used to. I will be more aware of that and correct it in the future. Thanks
Terry
