This year I am going to make a point of trying for some flight shots, I can spend four hours in the quarry and not come back with the shot I am looking for ,armed with a 300mm f4 it isn't easy as I have to pick up the bird quite close ,but I will have a go at it and that's the challenge as all my wildlife shots are with the 400mm 5.6 and the 300mm f4 ,what I am looking for is a head on shot with the birds wings fully open and horizontal .....and all the factors to fall in to place canon 1d mkiv 300mm f4 1600 sec iso 640 +1/3 ev https://c1.staticflickr.com/3/2941/15104530787_328dc7267e_b.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/p1JELB)Little owl in flight (https://flic.kr/p/p1JELB) by dennis greenwood (https://www.flickr.com/photos/dennisgreenwood/), on Flickr

I'm still a beginner at BIF but I know that one does improve with practise, it does come easier to get and hold the bird in the viewfinder. This shot could have done with double the iso and f-value to improve DOF. Also a 3x2 crop would have been better IMO.

I'd be well impressed with that shot if it were mine, Dennis. Nice one - the eyes look sharp and I quite like the bit of blur on the wingtips. If you have cropped it it could do with a bit more space on the bottom but that is a small point.
