I was just out playing with the 100-400 II and a 1.4X TCs. It's a much lighter kit than my normal 500f4 II for BIF.

1DX
100-400 II @ 400mm + 1.4X Tc = 560mm
1/4000
F8
ISO-1600
HH

The bird was angled away, but looking back at me.

Added a sliver of canvas at bottom

Thank you

Hi Loi,
this isn't working for me. focus lagged behind and locked on the tail leaving the head soft plus the eye is half closed. It just doesn't make a strong connection to the viewer., IMO a zoom lens and a TC just can't focus fast enough for a borrowing owl. Unfortunately if you want a quality shot you need to stick to your prime lens and work on your technique, it is heavier but there is no easy way around it. better luck next time

I hope you don't mind the honest critique :D

Arash has covered the technicals but using the 1.4x with that zoom interests me. Bearing Ari's caveats in mid, would it work with a 5D3?

With the 5D3 AF is going to be much slower than the 1DX when you add a TC to a slow zoom lens. It will be frustrating and unproductive if you want quality output. not recommended for flight.

Hi Arash, you are right of course, I was a bit slow in taking the shot, so the focus was way off the head. I think it is operator error as opposed to equipment. the 100-400 + 1.4 will never compare to the 500f4 of course, but the light weight is intriqueing and I took the shot for someone who considered using such combo. I should have waited until I got a sharp one, but BO is so fast I have a hard time getting the shots with my 500f4 as well.

The 5D3 with this combo is quite a bit slower. The 1DX is not so bad. I will try again sometime.

Thank you

Loi

Hi Loi

it shouldn't be that difficult to use your 500. Shoot me an email maybe I can help you.
