Photographed at Francis Beidler Forest. What a wonderful location. 2 miles of boardwalk suspended over a marsh, with 1000 year old Cypress trees
soaring through the canopy. Prothonotary Warblers everywhere. Audubon tags and keeps track of all the data collect on the Warblers for research.

I came across a pair of Barred Owls later in my travels. Photos to follow.

Lighting can be challenging in this forest. I used a gimbal and indirect fill flash for this shot @ 1/100 of a second.

D810 & Tamron 150-600mm @ 550mm
ISO 4500
1/100 second @ f/7.1

Catchlights removed,NR for background. Thought about removal of small branch on right side. Should I?

Thanks for looking

Ed:

Nice eye contact, the long focal length reduces the apparent upward shooting angle, soft foliage frames him well.

re: twig. Because it is sharp and its contrast against the soft bg, I would try a version without it.

Cheers

Great natural shot Ed, and I love that background. If only they were all like that ! The twig doesn,t bother me.
Great stuff

Lovely portrait. The green vegetation and even the distant twigs above frame your owl rather nicely. You have a lot of feather details in the owls face, and I like the look back pose.

Wonderful look-back pose, and I love the forest feel. Good vertical comp, and the use of fill is subtle (which is what you want). Yes, if mine I would get rid of that small twig that running behind the perch at right. I'd likely tone down the bright spots in upper right corner too. All else is super!
