I know it's not the classic woodpecker pose of my recent post, but I thought this was sort of fun, as an alternate view. The May Apples in the background, looking like giant trees, and the Velociraptor-like stance of the male Pileated Woodpecker, gave it a prehistoric look to me.

D7200, 80-400mm @ 400, ISO 1250, 1/1600s @ f/6.3 manual, HH.

I def. see where the title came from!

Not a common woodpecker shot, on the ground. Good low angle helps make it work.

The large stub in front of his face is mildly distracting, and in a perfect world, would prefer not to have the shadows on his side and neck, but I still find it an engaging and different image.
