This bird is only found in the Caledonian forests of Scotland and almost exclusively in Speyside. I had a wee trip to Speyside this weekend and managed to capture this one. It was within a wooded area, and the light conditions were limited.

The Scottish Crested Tits are geographically isolated from those on Mainland Europe and are now considered to be a sub-species.

The trip was well worth it :S3:

Thanks John :S3: I actually thought of that myself, but never had the choice there was so many. but the bird made the decision for me :S3:. I was surprised to see one today as they are scarce at this time of the year. Just managed six shots and thought this was the best one. They are wee birds :S3:

Great bird, and although the perch is indeed big it does have nice character to it. Good comp and pose. Looks like you may have applied NR to the perch...if so I would not - should be BG only for best results IMO.

Hi William, they are real characters and fast little buggers too, so well done. Like the lichen branch, but agree with Dan about the NR and the Blacks look a bit thin too, not sure if you lifted the image a tad, as there also seems to be a bit of noise creeping in to in the shadow areas. If you have it, then a crop fractionally moved down could also work. Be nice if you can get some snow on the branch later in the year, or in a nice Pine too. Don't worry to crank up the ISO 2500, 3200.. for a bit more DoF.

They just started to arrive when I was up in the Cairngorms, but just had the pleasure of watch a pair of Rough-legged Buzzards the other day on the Moors swept in from Scandinavia.
