While this egret could prove an exposure nightmare for many, it need not be difficult. Defining the meter pattern size to encompass that of a known value (black, white or mid-tone) in the same light as the subject greatly decreases the chance for error. Moreover, this eliminates the problem of the background causing erronous exposure recommendations.

Manual, spot off brightest white highlight plus 1 2/3 EV, 1/200 @ f/5.6, ISO 800,
Post-production- ARC, CS3, laptop

So I'm thinking spot metering.

I like the composition and the Snowy is well exposed.
IMO a slight head turn toward the camera and a little warmer look would really put this over the top.

Artfully composed, it almost seems to have an eastern aesthetic. The back bg is great here to pop the bird. I agree a bit warmer would be nice, catching one perched here just before sunset or just after sunrise would really be quite a capture.
