We almost mistook this one for the common grey francolin when it started calling out loud and thats when it struck us that this is actually a painted francolin, a rather rare find around my city. I did not want to pull up the shadows as that would have taken the mood out of the image.

An unusual and appealing shot.
However, my eye is drawn to the bright spot at the top rather than to the bird. I wonder if it would look better if you cropped or cloned that area out.
At the same time you might brighten the bird.

I'm a fan of the OP a bit more than the RP. I'd still consider brightening up the bird a bit, but the small in the frame works well for me.

Would like to see one with more of the rock, if possible

Cool calling pose and I like the rock it's standing on. I like the second comp best. I might try some NR on the BG. Nice work.

I like the calling pose and the low light conditions (morning or evening?). I prefer the OP's composition but I agree that the bright spot is distracting. I also find the white balance too greenish. Good idea on the size of the bird within the frame...makes it look like a really loud vocalist trying to fill all the surrounding air with song :-)
