Lamanai, Belize, in February. Did my best to mitigate the tropical sun, which was beginning to get bright by 8:00 AM when I found this fellow. Love the tail prop.

D7000, 700mm, ISO 1000, 1/1600s @ f/6.3 manual, fill @ 0EV.

Interesting subject. The image is sharp, and well exposed and composed. As you noted, the strong sunlight was a problem, but handled well under the circumstances. Eye contact is certainly good, but the bird's pose looks somewhat stiff and uncomfortable to me. Did you capture any other poses?

Thanks Norm. I did post a more classic woodpecker pose of this species back in February: http://www.birdphotographers.net/forums/showthread.php/118038-Golden-fronted-Woodpecker?highlight=

Very nice Bill. I love how the whites on its back just seem to be exploding into different directions! The sun is not always our best friend but you've done well here. Great pic!

Very nice shot, Bill! Though the light was not in your favor, your exposure is spot on. Excellent composition and lovely pose. TFS

I really like the inquisitive pose this guy is giving you. The techs look good considering the lighting and the colors look good too. Well done

Lovely image of this beautiful woodpecker Bill. I think it could use a bit more contrast. I like the pose. TFS

Interesting observation, Tom. By rights it should have more contrast, but I actually reduced the contrast a point or two to try and limit the effects of the harsh tropical sun. Maybe I went too far?

Really like the eye contact and the head turn. Lamanai is a special place for sure spent some time there in June.

I understand your point Bill, I think you can increase the contrast a bit and than cut back the whites if they become a problem.

I like the interest in you pose too. Agree with you on the tail bracing. I think you handled the harsh light well, plus it also has a beautiful warmth.
