Flight images are very dramatic and impressive but once in a while a "static" scene can be just as effective. On this particular day it was a very windy and cold day, with the owl preferring to hunker down near some dry vegetation. Hope you like the simplistic approach to this one :-)

Canon 7D + 500mm f/4 II, manual exposure, evaluative metering, 1/2500s., f/6.3, ISO 800, small crop for comp, a few stray twigs cloned out, the eyes enhanced both in luminosity and saturation (a downside of cloudy days with this species), boosted contrast to personal taste.

Daniel:

Very effective. I think the vegetation helps to ground the image a bit more. Looks cold.

I could see several crop variations, a bit off the top, move him out of the center a smidge, but works very well as is.

It won't be that long till they are back (I hope!)

Cheers

Japanese painting. The centered composition is perfect here.

I love it. Even if you hadn't told us you can see that it's very windy. The eye contact is nice too.

All the best, Tom

Lovely image. I think the composition is beautiful. The dry vegetation frames the owl, the white of the owl on the white of the snow compliments each other.

Just the right amount of room all around. I initially thought a pano crop would work well, but the negative space is a plus for me.

I love the way the snow and white plumage of the owl has simplified the image like a blank page, the dark parts of the owl and vegetation have been drawn on beautifully, also good how you have added a splash of yellow colour with the eyes, nice one Daniel!

Gorgeous. No nits; all said above. I could also imagine other comps, giving you a number of beautiful images from a single frame, but it is a winner just as posted.
