I currently own a Canon 70D but soon plan to purchase either a used 1DMIII or sell the 70D and purchase a 1DMIV. Either way, what Gitzo tripod would someone recommend for let's say a 1DMIII or MIV and a smaller lens like a 400MM f/5.6? I've gone to the Gitzo website but there's just so many models to choose from I don't know which to pick.

Anyone have any recommendations? Thanks!

For that equipment you'd probably be fine with the mid-sized models -- lower in price and lighter weight. Three leg sections are more stable than four, but won't collapse to as small a size for travel. I've had the 1257 for years and am very happy with it, but it's undoubtedly replaced by a newer model by now. I also have the Really Right Stuff mid-sized ball head, BH-25, which I also like but do wish the center post were just a little longer to avoid having to maneuver it into the notches so often. The beefier BH-55 is also very popular. For longer lenses, the 300 f/2.8 and up, I use a bigger Gitzo and a Wimberley II gimbal head.

I would hand hold this light rig.

I have been but I thought I might need a tripod for low light situations when I can't have a high shutter speed.

I have a 1DMIV and a 5DM3 cameras and the 400 f 5.6 L lens. When I don't shoot hand held, I use an Acratech Long Lens Pan and Tilt head ($329 at B&H) and a light Benro 2580 carbon fiber tripod.
The head is only 0.8 LBS and the two together is less then 4.0 LBS.
The tripod feels wobbly but with the right technics you can use it for large lens as I used it for 500/5DM3 and 500/1DMIV a few times.
If you plan to upgrade even further, a better tripod should be considered.
I have an old Gitzo and it is very stable, but you don't really need it for the 500 f5.6 L.

I meant to say 400 f5.6 L.
