Is anyone using this combination? I primarily shoot bif, have this lens, and wondered about the effectiveness of the combo. Thanks for your help.

Apart from eventually wanting more reach (and that takes TCs a little better) that should be a killer combo as the 400f/5.6 is a renowned excellent performer for BIF. Combine that with Canon's flagship camera with the best AF in the lineup and you should have something quite good.

Body is the best out there but lens is short and slow for general bird photography which is going to handicap the body. You can however, get great results for specific subjects under certain conditions. I wouldn't put a TC on a 400 f/5.6, the AF will be struggle as the that lens lacks the modern electronics to talk to the 1DX, not to mention soft output with a TC.

It's a great combination (unbeatable for the price), but the birds have to be close. AF is fast, and sharpness is excellent wide open. If you can't afford bigger (and faster) glass, I'd go for that combination without hesitation.

X2 on what Doug said. I shot a 400 5.6 for a year on a 5DIII before getting a 500f4 and sold several BIF pixs to DU and other publications that were shot with that combo.

Thanks everyone. That's what I thought but I just wanted to make sure before I spend the cash on a new camera.
