This species is considered a rarity around here. A female and two juvies showed up at a local grassland preserve recently, and to the best of my knowledge there has been only one other sighting of the species in New Jersey this year. The male has not been seen, and by this time is probably on his way to Costa Rica. Female and juvies (one of which has a lame leg) posed nicely in the diffused late afternoon light a few evenings ago. This is the healthy juvenile. C&C always greatly appreciated.

Super details and IQ. I like the thorny, slanted perch and the nice bg with just enough variation for interest.
I like your bird placement and comp too. Well done Bill, and congrats on getting a great shot of a rarity.

Nice, they are kind of rare around these parts as well.
I like the detail and the BG color compliments the bird very well, if it were my shot, i might crop a bit off the top, maybe down to first thorn?

Nice looking detailed shot of this little rarity. I like the thorny perch and that smooth colorful BG set this shot off nicely. Well captured.

Beautiful BG to set off this fine species. Love the perch as well.

Awesome Bill. Cool perch, great light quality, sharp details, exposure right on, excellent processing...I don't recall ever even seeing a dickcissel image of a young bird like this. Were I to see it in the field, I would have been clueless as to what it was.

Great find, Bill. Beautiful late afternoon light, detail, and thorny perch. Hope there might be some stragglers.

Such a great image of a juvi, Bill. We only have one or two adult vagrants per year if we do.

Thank you all for your comments. I agree, Shawn. This juvie would have thrown me for a loop if I hadn't seen it with the adult female.
