He seems to be thinking about next meal, good catch. The main issue here is the busy BG and lack of any separation between the bird and everything else in the frame which is too much distraction. The bird is also small in the frame and doesn't show much detail

thanks for your comments. I agree ... I was quite a ways away from the subject and didn't have enough reach with my M4/3 75mm. The background was extremely busy ... not sure how to eliminate that problem in the everglades other than shooting wide open and compromising sharpness. Next time ... :-)

At that distance from the bird you would not compromise sharpness photographing with a wider aperture if focused properly on the bird. As is the heron is a bit lost within the habitat. Other option would be to choose a subject in better location/situation. You did expose the image nicely and I like the stately pose atop the perch.
