Hi Miro, I thought the last one was good, this has just raised the bar even more, superb! For me, the DoF is spot on, with the head & beak in focus with a nice soft blur to the outstretch wings.

When you say 'manual focus' this is pre-set and it's a case of hitting the trigger just before & after the subject enters the zone?

Thanks Steve. Yes, focus pre-set and camera was in sequence mode, so I just manually start the sequence when bird is near the perch. However 5DIII is little bit slow, and the bird landing line could be different but let say roughly from 3-6 series I got 1 ok frame.

Loved the curled wings and the tiny deployed landing gear! Good comp, BG. Difficult to achieve, but you got it very nicely here.

Very nice landing shot. I prefocus allot on incoming and out going shots. As you have figured out, the servo isnt fast enough to track a bird coming at you this fast. It's fun shooting a burst and then seeing the exact frame that it flew into the perfect plane. You had to have been happy when you looked at the view finder. Great capture. You need a 1DX for this stuff:) The only wish would have been to see the tail.Next time:)

Hi David, it would be great to do a comparison, as yes the frame rate is be better, but my understanding is that the 1Dx is not so good in Silent mode, the 5DIII is better and more suited for this kind of work? May have a chance to see the 5D when I hook up with some BPN bods in the next day or so, as if it is quieter, it would be great for the on going Little owl project, but sadly will not trade the two 1DX's in. :w3

1Dx is not so good in Silent mode

Yes the silent mode is a point but in the case of European Bee-eater it is not so important. I used normal 6fps mode (H-speed). After first sequence bee-eaters didn't afraid any more. So in this case I guess 1DX with 12fps will be much more appropriate and efficient. However some other species are very sensitive on shutter sound and in this case I prefer 5DIII pure silent mode. Hope next 1's will have it. Cheers! Miro

I spent a most of this spring setup 18 yards from a tree groups of wood ducks perch in and the 5DIII silent mode was spectacular. Before I had to have the blind 2x that distance to keep them from spooking at the shutter sound. Wood ducks are scared of their own shadow around here but the silent shutter really made a difference.
