This past month there have been repeated sightings of this species from all over New Jersey. Something to do with the Great Lakes being frozen over, I'm told. This one suddenly presented himself to me about a month ago as I was hunkered down among the reeds, waiting for some action among the Lesser Scaup flock on a small pond. He appears to be in transition from non-breeding to full breeding plumage. Someday I'd love to see one in full breeding plumage, but this will do for now.

So cool specie!
Nice to see how you shoot it from a low perspective, nice light and sharp where counts!

Sweet image, Bill. Love the head tilt and that we can see a bit of the foot. The muted blue color is a perfect compliment to the pluamage of this bird. Well done.

Very nice capture! Great head angle, catchlight, and detail.

The neck looks a bit grey to me. Not sure if that's part of the actual color or if it's a bit too much detail extraction/burning.

Thanks everyone. Miguel, that's the natural color of the neck -- grey, as depicted by Sibley. There was no burning or detail extraction.

I like the low angle, HA, sharpness, visible foot and composition. Very well done Bill.
