I just got back from a great week in Florida with my wife and David Salem. We started our trip with Jim Neiger, photographing from his pontoon boat on Lake Blue Cypress. The remainder of the week was spent with Marina Scarr, Amy Marques, Cheryl Arena, Troy Lim, and David Pugsley. Lake Blue Cypress is absolutely incredible for Osprey, Pileated Woodpeckers, and Barred Owls, and no one knows the lake better than Jim. Here's a frame from our first afternoon of photography.

Canon 1Dx, 500mm II, f/5.6, 1/2000, ISO 800, manual exposure, hand held

This is a real eye-catcher, a great shot. Head and wing position are great, your angle to the flight path makes a really good perspective. I also really like the background, the way the top and bottom are defined by the different but compatible colors. Congratulations on a winner.

Wow very nice. Was the DOF like that or did you apply a little blur to wing edge inline with the face?

Thanks Joe. No BG blurring was applied.

Excellent, terrific detail in the facial disc, oh man I NEED a 1DX!! Having siad that the most important bit is the person behind the camera and you certainly nailed it well done, love it.

Hi Doug, love the sharp detail on the face - it really pops out from the owl's body, so Im fine with the shallow DOF. Good wing position, and I do like the colours of the BG. Well captured.

Great light, BG, and incoming pose! It may not be white and in snowy habitat but that is a fine, fine owl right there...plus I'm sure your fingers were not numb from the cold:t3

Doug the light in this image is supreme!
Also, the clarity on the bird's eyes is quite impressive. Love everything about this one. It looks like you had a blast on your last trip!

Awesome flight angle and pose. Love the bg too. Looking forward to more from what sounds like a very productive trip.
Were you just super lucky to have this owl flying at this angle or was it attracted in any way?

Killer image, Doug. My favorite part of this image besides the obvious sharpness and flight pose is that it showcases the various types of feathers used for flight so well.
