This Whooper Swan image was created at 8:11am on February 20, 2014 on our great swan morning at Lake Kussharo on the Japan in Winter IPT with the the Gitzo 3532 LS carbon fiber tripod (https://store.birdsasart.com/shop/item.aspx?itemid=20), the Mongoose M3.6 head (https://store.birdsasart.com/shop/item.aspx?itemid=274), the Canon EF 600mm f/4L IS II USM lens, the Canon 1.4x EF Extender III (Teleconverter), and the Canon EOS-1D X. ISO 800. Evaluative metering +1 2/3 stops off the snow: 1/2000 sec. at f/5.6 in Manual mode. Color temperature: 7000K.

Central sensor/AI Servo/Surround Rear Focus AF on the bird’s left breast was active at the moment of exposure. Note that the point of focus was nicely on the same plane as the bird’s face. Click here (http://www.birdsasart-blog.com/2013/10/31/if-this-doesnt-get-the-point-across-nothing-will/) to see the latest version of the Rear Focus Tutorial.

You can see more images from that great morning here (http://www.birdsasart-blog.com/2014/02/23/600-f4-l-is-ii-with-1-4x-ii-tc-and-the-200-400-f4l-is-with-internal-tc-and-at-swan-lake/).

As for the image, don't be shy; all comments are welcome.

I fly home today leaving Tokyo at noon and getting into Orlando just 2 1/2 hours later on the same day! See tons more Japan stuff by scrolling down here (http://www.birdsasart-blog.com/).

I like the wing position, water drops, hanging feet and composition. The BG is busy but because it is OOF it works well. Nice image Arthur.

Good subject, composition, wing position and action. The water droplets add interest. But feather detail could be improved.

Perfect exposure. Whites look good to me.
I think the water droplets really "make" this image. The details in the blacks are excellent.
Good solid BG.
When you say color temperature, do you mean you changed it in camera or in PP?

Another fantastic image Artie. Love the angle of the swan with fully stretched wings.
When you say the face would be on the same focal plane as the left breast would it not be slight forward of that point with these birds flying with an outstretched neck?

Beautiful incoming shot! Love the wing and feet positions. Good head angle! The whites look good, but I would love to see bit more feather details, I thought it look a bit smooth.

Perfect bird placement and comp (imo) and lovely bg. Droplets add a whole lot to this image. Whites look good to me too.

Thanks. In-camera. My next step is to learn to confidently do the custom pre-set white balances.... The whites and the detail in them look fine to me too :)

Lovely shot good timing and focus, well exposed. Even though well/correctly exposed I would personally lower the highlights a little bit, also reduce the yellows a tad on the bill.

Hi Arthur

Such a great moment to fire that shutter, love the pose. Elegant birds indeed.
Just for interest on my Acer Laptop I see excellent details on the whites!

Great composition. And you nailed it with landing gear down. You managed the details in the white very well. I like to look at this image.
Thanks for sharing.

I'm totally addicted to birds in al kinds and forms. My favorites are Ducks, Swans and Geese. I live in Germany in walking range to a grey heron rookery. Fly by in 20m distance.
And since one week finally at a 500/4 to replace my budget telephoto lens.
