These tiny characters spend a great deal of time jumping from branch to branch usually in the center of a shrub. I felt quite lucky to get this image on a relatively clear perch. It seems this one was comfortable enough not to show its ruby crown. Crop is 30% of FF. Did bit of work on eye, darkened some of the brighter branches in Cs6. C&C welcome.

D3s, Nikon 500mm + 1.4x, 1/320, f5.6, ISO 1250, Gitzo series 5 tripod, Wimberley Gimbal Head

Think you have done very well get a shot at all with how you describe this bird, it's just that brown branch that runs close to the birds beak that is a real distraction makes me won't to grab the cutters, can't see that you can do much about it.Having said all this I think the bird itself looks very good and I would be very pleased to have got this shot.

They are very fast little buggers, the stick is a distraction but you really nailed the little sprite.
