White Shaman Shelter, Lower Pecos River Canyonlands

Over the Thanksgiving weekend, camped in Seminole Canyon State Park to visit the lower Pecos Canyonlands. This area is dotted with rock shelters adorned with paintings that date prior to 2000 BCE. White Shaman is a site that is owned by the Rock Art Foundation and is open to the public via a weekly tour on Saturdays. It involves about a mile hike with 250 feet of climbing. If you come to Texas to bird along the Rio Grande and out to Big Bend, consider visting the state park as well. For those of us that are enamored with preserving visual images, seeing the work of the ancients is a moving experience.
