I took advantage of the clean fresh snowfall this past weekend and was rewarded with a nice series of juncos on the snow images. Posing nicely on a fluffy snow mound :-) Lured to this spot with a handful of seeds placed on the ground nearby.

Canon 7D + 500mm f/4 II + 1.4TC, manual exposure, evaluative metering, 1/320s., f/5.6, ISO 800 (about 30% of the snow was a big "blinkie" on the camera LCD), natural light, handheld, small crop for comp, eye work (darken pupil), and toned down highlights via shadows/highlights to make the snow ridges and layers more visible.

Jealous of your snow. Great looking image and I'd be tempted to revisit the plumage tones to see if I could richen them up slightly with tone adjustment and say saturation.

Really sweet image!
The junco seems to not be bothered by the, I bet, cold snow, the contrast and exposure makes the bird pop.

Daniel, you always nail the exposure with even images like this (lots of white/black with some of the other as well).

Great job of getting him with some seed. Looking forward to some more snow images!

I like the snow setting, eye contact, claw poking out through the snow, IQ and exposure. Well done as usual Daniel!

I thought the image might be improved with a bit of extra contrast in selective areas, especially the eye. I painted that in with a couple of adjustment layers in Photoshop. Not sure if you prefer this but on my monitor it looks better.

Hi Daniel,
One of the nicest junco shots I have seen. I thought the OP was spot on in terms of exposure and contrast but must say that Henry's rework with contrast really does improve the eye area.
I really like the comp on this image as well,

Hi Daniel, great simplicity to the whole image. The colouring of the plumage works/ties in nicely with the overall look and feel, just the right amount of detail in the snow too. Just a thought, but adding some midtone to the subject only I think may help?
