This individual let me belly crawl up to minimum focussing distance (about 12 feet with the 500mm f/4 II) for some full-frame head-and-shoulder shots. It stayed there for a whopping 5 minutes while I tried a variety of angles and camera settings. Here I stopped down to ensure enough depth of field on the whole subject.

Canon 7D + 500mm f/4 II + 1.4TC, manual exposure, evaluative metering, 1/400s., f/10, ISO 400, natural light, handheld (elbows on ground), minor bill clean-up via patch tool, tamed a white hot spot via burn tool, darkened pupil.

Sharp as it gets ;)

What amazing feather details!!!

White looks very good and BG is superb. On my monitor the eye looks like it could be lightened very slightly to make the pupil/iris difference more noticeable.

Hi Dan, great close up showing oodles of detail, and good choice at F/10 to make it work. Nice and sharp, and I like the hint of sand on the beak. Nicely posed against a killer BG too.
