Great BG and perch and HA. The moss and lichen really add interest.
I am wondering why you used flash? Not challenging your decision just trying to learn when to use flash ( which I never do cause I don't know how)

Hi Sid, love the light, which in turn has shown up the colours of the Jay nicely. Great choice of perch, as I do like the scattered lichen. Cant complain about the BG either. Great work.

Gail,
In this setup, the light wasn't really that great and I was seeing shadows. I used flash with BB to fill and help with the shadows.

Flash can be fun to experiment with.

In the image below, I wanted to retain the deep bg color. I underexposed ambient just a tad and lit the bird with flash instead.

Or a touch of fill flash to make the bird pop against the bg:

A common situation where a flash comes in handy is if your bg is brighter than the bird, and would be blown out/too bright if you exposed correctly for the bird.
A flash allows me to control how much light I want on the subject v/s the bg.

I only ever use it as fill, never as a main source of light (I worry about how that would affect a subject, especially one with sensitive eyes.)

I'm definitely no flash expert - now you know everything about it that I do.
