Looks like Adobe is scrambling a bit?

Adobe stated that owners of Photoshop CS3+ will be eligible to receive Photoshop CC and Lightroom 5 together for US$9.99/month with a 12-month commitment.

Still, after one year then what happens to pricing??? And do you own LR???

This is a fair price IMO and I plan to sign up for it. I'm pleased that Adobe listened to the photographic community and gave us the products we want for a reasonable price.

I still don't like it. No company would make this change without an expectation of more profit, and guess where that profit comes from!

I'll pass as well. Being an amateur I could care less. I'll run CS6 into the ground. I am not a fanatic about color or PP perfectly.
Actually Elements will do everything I will ever want. So will many programs I imagine. Just to lazy to try a new one until CS6 dies.

I couldn't be more pleased with this news. I just signed up last month for PS CC at the introductory offer of $9.99/m as the offer expired 8/31. I also own LR. In 12 months my plan price was to rise to $19.99/m. Now, with this new plan, my price will stay $9.99/m AND I'll get LR updates.

On a side note, did anybody else participate in a survey from Adobe a month or so ago about this very issue? I like to think I played a microscopic part in making this new plan a reality :)

The price does not go up after one year. From the Adobe blog:

I just phoned Adobe for a matter of interest and apparently the $9.99/mo deal ended 31 August.

Addendum: Just called Adobe again and spoke to another sales person. It turns out the $9.99/month deal starts on 17 Sep and lasts until 31 Dec 2013. So the deal isn't available quite yet. The sales person told me they only heard about it yesterday. At Adobe all this is called the "Photoshop Photography Program".

That expiration was for the single app license, not the new PS/LR combo. It's all very confusing. :)

Adobe gave you incorrect information. This new product was just announced yesterday, and the price is being offered until the end of the year.

IMHO, there is nothing inherently wrong with profit, or wanting more profit. If one is too greedy the market will respond by simply refusing to buy.

I suspect this CC business model is more about Adobe missing out on a sales because of piracy, and presumably the CC approach is their attempt to control that. Being one who believes it is right to pay for artist's and developer's work, I hope they make a lot of money from folks who otherwise were buying Chinese pirated versions on ebay.

For me, $10 per month for the current version of PS and LR will be a better deal than paying for upgrades under the old system. YMMV however.

I think you are mostly right Barry, although Adobe made it very hard to pirate their software with the later versions before CC. The move to subscription will surely cut the piracy down. I agree there is nothing wrong with profit and if Adobe wins by more people using the product then good for them. As a general principle, and completely off topic, what I don't understand is the pervasive business model in the world today which demands profits always rise over time. By definition, nothing can grow indefinitely in a finite system.

One aspect of this still really pisses me off. This is only for current owners of PS. So Adobe is saying to the entire future of young photographers: "We don't value you as a customer. Go somewhere else."

Good point Alan. Of course they do offer students the complete suite of software for $19.99 per month. But who's to say that they won't expand the program at a later date if it proves successful.

Moving to the cloud was not done to combat piracy Adobe has already stated that you can get pirated version today if you want to.

The reasons Adobe went to the CC are two fold:
1. To get a steady stream of income with monthly fees coming in on a consistent basis and not income coming in every 18 months.
2. Adobe thought that it might be an opportunity to increase their profits as seen by their first pricing strategy.
As stated above going to the CC had nothing to do with piracy.

I think the $10 a month is not a bad price for both Photoshop and Lightroom. I still have reservations however. The biggest problem is you never own the software and if you quit paying you no longer have access to Photoshop CC. The way I currently work is to save all my layers, in case I want to rework the images in the future. I also print from Photoshop, 6 x 9 inches up to 24 x 36 inches. The images get resized and sharpened at the time of printing (use Focalblade or Photokit sharpener for sharpening).

In their new offer it says:

If it is not an introductory offer why must I make up my mind by December 31 2013?

There is no contract that states how long the 9.99 will stay in effect.

Remember what happened with CS6, they were going to make everyone upgrade to CS5 before they could purchase the CS6 upgrade and future Photoshop upgrades (Adobe backed down on this policy). At the same time they said full upgrades would be every 24 months with minor upgrades (free for current users) occurring every 12 months. What happened to C6.5( there was a CS5.5)? It turned into Photoshop CC instead.

That deal sounds a lot better than previous and it shows that Adobe is listening...but this is my main gripe about this new deal...it should be made available for joining permanent, not just until December 31st. I'm likely OK with CS6 and LR4 for a few years (considering I was still on CS2 and LR2 less than a year ago)...and I'd probably want this deal then, not now. So come on Adobe...make this "photographer" bundle permanently available!

Interesting! I agree that the new pricing is more in line with what we have been paying for upgrades even if you skip an edition. However the concept of locking myself into what would be a lifetime contract with Adobe with future prices undetermined is not what I am comfortable with. I will keep CS6 and upgrade LR as I choose (now I am using LR4). If this no longer meets my needs I will then evaluate all the alternatives available at the time and decide.
