I was out at the pond tonight, and Jim was back up on the floating vegetation. A bit different look than last time, as it was dark enough that I needed flash this time.
D700 Nikkor 300 f/4 with 25mm tube, f/11 1/100s fill flash. Mounted on ground pod
Post: 30% crop, toned down some flash induced hot spots.
Last time the tip of the nose was a bit blurred, so I worked on focusing just in front of the eyes, to bring my dof zone ant. just a bit. I think it was a good compromise.
Advice and comments always appreciated.
Cheers

Two wonderful frogs in one evening! What's not to like... Great color and tonalities and I like the curved line of eye movement coming up from the LL.
An alternative crop could be to trim a little off the top, but this certainly works as presented.

Thanks, Randy. I've got to love this guy, and the excellent way you've captured him.

Jim looks like one cool dude, I love the pose he looks to be just lounging about like he owns the leaves! I think the focus is definitely better in this one, I reckon this is a real gem.

Thanks for the kind comments, much appreciated. I rather liked the large drops, in which you can see a distorted image of the frog (have to use your imagination a bit!)
I just wanted to be clear, that although we have a name for the frog, he is wild, goes where he chooses, and isn't manipulated in anyway.

Hi Randy. I liked your first image of "Jim," but this one has better light and overall sharpness. I also like the low shooting angle, the vertical comp, and the water drops on the leaves. Excellent work!

Great photo. I love that he is looking right at you. The water drops really add to it.
I never about using an extension tube with the 300 f4. Do you find it works pretty good? How close were you to the frog?

Karen:
I was about 30" away. Tried it initially without the tube, but didn't get the close framing that I wanted. I have a Sigma 180mm macro lens, but not enough mag. for what I was after.

I like how those two big eyes stand out! The composition is pleasing--green surrounded by green. I, too, like that water drop. Nice work.
