I took this image this morning.
The light is usually very challenging at that place and I can't move around.
I compensate against by using fill flash but I did not carry it with me this time.
Thanks for looking.

Karl,

The background colors compliment the heron very well! The detail and colors are great here. Great head angle too!

I would say, if you can, to reduce the contrast in the background just a tad. I gave it a shot (and very roughly masked out the heron) by using Nik Tonal Contrast and bringing the shadows way down and then adding a blank layer and painting in a sampled green at 10% opacity. IMO, it helps the heron pop a bit more.

Thanks Miguel. I like your version. The background looks much better. I'll try to duplicate it for my learning's sake.

The re-post works very well. The original wasn't to shabby either.

When I saw the original I thought "Less contrast" then Miguel told me how to do it in his repost. Thanks for the lesson, and the result is very pleasing to my eye. Colors are beautiful.

Lovely shot in very tricky lighting, I attach an alternative for your consideration, I did similar to Miguel plus a reverse curve on the bird:-

Thanks Jon. It is nice to see different versions of the same, plus you can learn from it.
