I guess I could have added more light, but the bird really is close to black, and I didn't want him to look gray.

Hi Kent,
I like your composition. Yes your bird is missing just a little detail on the left portion of the body. Perhaps with a flash, it would have taken care of that...:D

Looks good Kent !!! These guys are nearly impossible You did get good light on the bird and shows on the feather reproduction Ideally you want the same detail through out the bird but I have not been able to do so !!!

About the only think you could have done better is having the bird land on a single branch !!!! :)
