This is an arid zone species here in Australia. They have evolved with a sharp pointed beak which enables them to pick up spinifex seeds in their rocky habitat.
Ormiston, NT, April 2013.

D800, 300 2.8, 1.7TC, f/8, 1/500, ISO800.
Thanks, Greg.

Very attractive bird, sharp and nice perch.
I would crop the bottom part of the oof perch.

Very lucky Greg - I have never seen one and alas never photographed this species. Nice portrait - would not change a whole lot. Love to see this species front on as the colour is on their fronts.

What an impressive bird. Congrats on catching him, and thanks for sharing another species I'll probably never see. I could imagine a bit off the bottom, even if you wanted to add a corresponding amount to compensate on the top.

I like the comp as presented, although I can see that some may had preferred the lower part of the perch to be within dof. Fantastic BG, and the colours on the subject are well rendered. Love that blue eye!

Beautiful bird, excellent sharpness, and a nice BG. I can see why you included more of the perch from a compositional standpoint, but the fact that it's substantially OOF makes we want to crop a bit off the bottom.

I'd like to see this as a horizontal crop with less of the OOF perch in the frame.
Love the colors an details in this shot!

Well done!

what a beauty! loved all the details, colors and that sweet BG. I also agree that from a comp. standpoint, vertical is good choice but that perch being OOF...a horizontal might have worked better...8X10 aspect ratio.
