Van...do you have the manual handy (or maybe download one from Canon's site)
so you can see what I'm referencing?

If so, check out page 96. It mentions that if you're in AI Servo Mode, you will not
get the confirmation light or beep in the viewfinder.

Are you in AI-Servo mode by any chance?

I would say it has to be for auto focus...cause when you think about it, if you're in manual focus,
the camera really has no idea if what it's seeing is in focus or not...it's relying on the human eye
to determine that...hence no confirmation from the camera.

I'm not familiar with the Mark IV, but with the 10D, 20D, 5D, 5D II, and 7D that I've used you certainly do get focus confirmation in the viewfinder and the focus confirmation beep when the subject has been correctly manually focused. Even though you're using manual focus you would still want the AF selection set to One Shot as there would be no focus confirmation if it's set to AI Servo, even though your focusing manually.
