Another look at this amazing species before it got too close. I still was not able to fit it in the frame (this is FF)...man, where's my 100-400 when I need it!!:t3 I love this spot at this time of year as all of last year's dried up reeds and cattails allow for neat BGs and the new vegetation is fresh and very short to allow good views of early hard to see (but easy to hear) migrants such as bitterns, snipes, and rails.

canon 7D + 500mm f/4 II + 1.4 TC, manual exposure, evaluative metering, 1/1600s., f/5.6, ISO 400, handheld, a longer horizontal distracting twig cloned out among the grasses, some darker patches in the BG evened out via low opacity clone.

Fine image of a fine looking speciman. That breeding plumage is suberb. Only positives from me on this one, Daniel. Well done.

This is nice and sharp Dan, I agree sometimes a zoom does come in handy! Nice pose and great detail in the plumage. You could carry two bodies now, One for 500 & another with the 100-400 on it! :bg3:

Beautiful! The "forced crop" works very well for me, with this pose.

This is really nice.
I love the extended neck and the BG is great.
Tack sharp and IQ is awesome as well.
You are doing great with that new toy of yours! The 1.4x is a godsend sometimes and other times one can't get it off fast enough. Wish they had an off/on switch for it

What a terrific image, Daniel. Love the details, colors & pose. You picked just the right place to crop the legs. You are just killing it with that new lens!!!

Hi Dan, great IQ, and the light is exquisite. Well timed to capture the 'looking up' pose, and the BG is superb.

wish to see the rest of the tail and the ground where the feet disappear into. Great details in this photo, Daniel.
