American Goldfinch starting to come into breeding plumage. Photographed through an open window, using the window frame for support. There is a rim of snow and ice on the aspen branch. I cloned away a few distracting bkgd branches.

Canon 1D mark IV, Canon 400 f4 DO IS, 1/500, f8, ISO 400, exp. comp. +2/3

Nice shot Nancy. I like the pose, HA and the perch. Exposure looks great as do the feather details. Cant think of much to crit since it such a nice shot. Oh, I like the comp too. Nice work.

Sweet shot. I rarely see goldfinches fluffed up! Something about the background bugs me, too flat and featureless maybe?

Wonderful image Nancy, lots of nice details and the yellows are perfect. Love the frost on the perch. I'd prefer the subject lower in the frame but that is the only improvement I can suggest see here.

Thank you all! Jim, interesting that you mention the bkgd. It appeared somewhat blotchy and I smoothed it out. Possibly too much.

Nice image Nancy, The yellow is so rich, you captured it well. I think the background is fine.

I think it's just me! I'm assuming BGs like this and those I see throughout the forums are achieved through the use of wide aperture lenses. I've never used one so the concept is really foreign to me. The only time I've managed a BG like that was when a chickadee perched on a branch in front of a solid grey trashcan:) Still a beautiful capture.

Beautiful shot Nancy! I've always loved Goldfinches myself and just photographed some this past week! Really like the pose with him being fluffed out. Nice HA, excellent sharpness and exposure.
