Seeing the excellent high iso images from Amy Kay and Joel Eade I tried out my D800 this evening under cloudy, dark conditions. D800, 300mm, 1.4tc, tripod. 1/640, F5.6, ISO 5000. Adjusted WB, -.30 exposure, -18 whites, cropped in ACR. USM in CS6. did no noise reduction. This was a setup.

I can see I'm going to have to invest in a more upmarket camera with high ISO results such as this.

A great small in frame shot Jack giving a good indication the size of the bird, I do like the clarity of the grassy stems and extra nice against the green backdrop

Nice image Jack. Remarkable IQ at that ISO. I'm finding that, if I get a good exposure (ETTR), I can leave auto-ISO max set to 6400 and get pretty good quality for the most part.

Very nice quality at this ISO, Jack, and I am really liking the small bird in the frame. It's quite a powerful image. Might consider playing with the comp a little depending on how much canvas you have. Maybe put him a little more lower left corner.

the image is unique in terms of the composition and thats what makes me like it, a perfect BG is what sets it up to be that way to my eye.
sometimes with such images i may be tempted to have the bird smaller in the frame than even this .
Love the way this one is presented.
