Has anyone heard when in April the Canon 5D Mark III Firmware update will arrive? I heard that it will allow AF with Teleconverters on many of the long lenses instead of being stuck with manual focus. Is that a fact or wishful fiction?

It's true. The new firmware will enable AF when your maximum aperture is f/8 (the present maximum aperture for AF is f/5.6). I haven't heard anything new on the timing of the firmware release.
