American Tree Sparrow.

2013 has been pretty exciting with the Great Gray Owl irruption, but I have to admit I have been extremely eager to go out and photograph some other species! I got some good stuff this weekend and it was refreshing to photograph smaller songbirds. Here's an American Tree Sparrow that was taking advantage of fallen seeds near a feeder. The BG is snow, shading in that snow, and dry grass.


Canon 7D + 100-400L @400mm, manual exposure, evaluative metering, 1/320s., f/6.3, ISO 800, natural light, handheld, some small dark particles in the snow eliminated via Spot Healing Brush, small crop for comp (about 80% FF).

Very nice and one of my sparrows. Contrary to custom here I would have frmed it in judt a little bit tighter.

Love this sparrow image. Its got great head/body angle and the snow is killer. I wouldn't crop any tighter if it were mine.

Awesome. Dig the perspective. Enjoy the warm/cold tonal play. Nice texture and details
in the fg snow/ice. Really the only aspect of the image that I think might have been improved
at the time of capture, would be to have the bird's right foot perched up just a bit to show better....
but that's minor stuff for sure.

Wonderful soft tones Daniel and liking the faint color tinges showing through the snow , sweet detail and eye on this little bird, only thing I would look at is removal of the slightly darker splotch on the top right....but it's really quite insignificant overall.

Nice light and exposure that brought out some very nice detail in the sparrow. I like the almost all white snow BG and the bird has a nice pose. Well done.
