Taken over the Christmas holiday at Morton NWR In Long Island, NY. Had a few hours of nice light with member Grace Scalzo. A first for me as were most of the birds we shot that morning.

1DMKIV---500mm---f7.1---ss1/800---ISO800---HH@ 8:45am---20% crop

Thanks as always for looking and for your input. Appreciated.

Very high quality image, excellent detail and beautiful colours, I like the composition but I would consider a slightly looser crop, you may have considered this already and perhaps thought the branch may then appear a little large in the frame??

Fine portrait indeed. Super exposure, detail and colors. Nice perch. Maybe just a tad tight for my taste but regardless this is really a super close up of this species.

Great pose, showing off the red belly, David. The slanting perch is great so is the background.

Very nice, David. That was a great morning. It is tight in the frame, but the lines created by the perch and the bird seem to make it not matter. Nothing like using the 500 with no teleconverters.

Thanks for the comments everyone.
That was a great morning Grace and I appreciate your help and your friendship. I got quite a few nice shots of species that I dont ever get to see.
I tried some looser comps but as Johnathan mentioned the perch became a bit overbearing so I kept it a little tighter.

Hi David, love the light in this, which in turn has brought out perfect exposure and colours. What I really like about this, is the hint of indentation of the perch where he has probably started to peck. If I had one wish , it would be to have a touch more space below.

I like the pose, perch, and BG. Nice colours too. Beautiful details. Tight as mentioned, but I'm OK with your reasoning of it. I still think you could get away with a bit more room. Processing-wise I'd attempt to eliminate the faint straight line on the BG running along the subject's shoulder/back

Lovely pose and excellent IQ. Like seeing the red belly (I remember wondering, when I had just started birding, why this bird was called red bellied)
Could see a looser crop, but I see your point. Very nice image.

This is a very good RBW shot David. It is one of the better that I have seen. The overall feel of this is right, the colors, the perch angle, the smooth BG, the perfectly exposed WP. I only wish for a little more top and bottom.
