A marsh next to the forest area provided a nice setting for the owls with all the dry winter cattails. Made for different photos than we are used to seeing from this species this year...

Canon 7D + 100-400L @235mm, manual exposure, evaluative metering, 1/1600s., f/6.3, ISO 800, natural light, handheld, small crop for comp, some brighter trees toned down. NR to BG. Baited.

It is indeed different that the snowy landscape we have seen so far. I like both the forest and the cattails here. There is still a nice separation between the owl and the BG and the eyes as always are very intense. You have been having a fun time with these birds this season. TFS.

Daniel,

A beauty! The cattails really do it for me on this one. My first inclination was to ask for a bit on the left (it looks like he's banking that way), but for some reason the image is balance really well.

Even with similar tones and colors between the owl and the bg, it pops out nicely. Very well done!

One after another, I am running out of adjectives.
I like this one because it is different, I like the marsh habitat a lot.

Everybody said what first came to my mind. This is very different from the snow scenes. An excellent habitat shot that is well exposed and sharp.

This is wonderful, but I have a question about a phrase I've seen a few times lately: "manual exposure, evaluative metering." In ME, isn't the metering method not a factor? Doesn't it just potentially cause a slight tweak in auto exposure?

Love how the wing tips are separated from the BG, really makes the owl stand out. Fantastic.

So good it hurts!
Looks like short eared owl habitat. The surroundings make this one special...
And the light quality, sharpness, composition, and all that other stuff too...

Hi Dan, the wing positions you guys have managed to capture time and time again are simply superb. Love the eye contact, and even against a darker BG, the GGO still pops nicely. I feel you have left just enough cattails at the bottom, and they certainly shine bright.

Daniel Sir:
Absolutely superb image of GGO.As usual every thing is just perfect.
Love the pose and great 3D effect caused by BG and Grass in FG.

The best GGO to date for me, love the pose colours and wonderful detail, the background and foreground are entirely complimentary to the terrific pose. This would make one heck of a good print.

Hi Daniel. Excellent flying pose and very sharp. I like the habitat in the background - and the way the owl stands out from it. The cattails in the foreground add a nice touch. Another outstanding image!
