This fella was quite accomodating, allowing Stephen Stephen and I to take turns photographing it at will. When I saw it was not going anywhere soon I slapped on another Kenko tube to get right in to its face . About 80% full frame (cropped a bit top and right). About the curved leaf tip in front of the face: sometimes I like it there, sometimes not...I might make a version of both!

Canon Rebel XT + 50mm 1.8 lens + stacked 36mm and 20mm extention tubes, 1/400s., f/5.6, ISO200, fill-flash (FEC -1/3), handheld.

Being a fan of wide open, this has just the right DOF for me. Love the angulaar eye and the diffused colors of the wing.

Daniel, IMO DOF is distractingly shallow here.

Neat shot Daniel. I love the limited DOF, it looks just right.

I like the DOF and the selective focus, but the OOF leaf in the BG is distracting to me so I like it but dont love it.

A very obliging butterfly Daniel. Normally I prefer greater DOF for insects but I like this one with sharp focus up front!! The OOF wings work here for me probably because of the cropping.
Yes I also find that leaf a distraction in the BG but trying to remove it would no doubt have ended with no subject !!!

Nice capture Daniel. I would have liked to see just a bit more dof but this composition does work. The leaf in the background has been addressed. Getting the right background is often more difficult than finding the subject.

Hey Daniel, I'm a fan of both wide open or stopped down all the way depending on the image. This one works for me. I like the earth tone colors in this one.

A fine image, the shallow DOF is effective, the sharpness is where it needs to be. The setting is typical for this butterfly, a Spring Azure - they land on the ground in leaf litter frequently.

They aren't always this obliging. In fact, they are pretty skittish more often than not. So this was a good opportunity!
