For those of you who prefer your pelicans in focus, here's another from Ding Darling 3 weeks ago. To me, this is an example of how off-angle lighting can sometimes help to bring out feather detail. Also an example of how a long backscratcher can be a benefit.

Another very nice preening image Bill - very well exposed and I agree about the angled lighting emphasizing the feather detail and giving some modelling to the contours as seen on the neck and breast.

The feather detail is very nice. The position of the bird and preening posture is cool. I also like the reflection.

You have the ligh from the right angle to bring out the fine feather details Bill. Great shot excellent exposure and nice preeding pose.

Nice light and feather detail especially the chest area. I almost have a want for more leg room below but I keep going back and forth with it.

The pose gives the bill a unique look not oft seen for this subject.
Great light quality and well exposed. I also like the feather detail
brought out by the light angle. The composition looks just fine as
is, but due to the pose, I could also see presenting this with the
subject a bit more centered as well.
