Looking through a few of my older files and found a couple which seemed worthy. This was taken at the Venice Rookery about 2 years ago in January.

Canon EOS 7D, ISO 800, 500 mm f/4 L IS, f/10 at 1/1600 sec. PP in LR4.2, moderate crop from top and left (16x9) for composition, underexposed original (my inexperience) and corrected exposure in post about 1.5 stops; shadows slider +26, Contrast +14; Blacks -29; Clarity +33; strong sharpening in LR; moderate masking of BG, moderate NR; Adjustment brush was used to brighten eye about 1 stop.

As always, C/C are welcomed and encouraged as I am still learning a lot from this site.

I like the pose here, and the amount of perch showing at is just right. Comp is OK too. There is some colour noise that was the result of your initial underexposure and subsequent correction in post. If mine I'd probably eliminate the greenery below from directly below the bill to the left edge.

Dennis:

Good comments from Daniel. I like the pose, very dynamic. I think the net effect of your adjustments is that the bird looks a bit over processed, esp. along the neck. Might be able to back off slightly on the sharpening.

Cheers

A nicely caught pose Dennis having lots of impact. I do, however, find the composition a little tight here.

Thank you Daniel and Randy. I tried to back off on the sharpening a bit, and upped the color noise reduction. I also cloned out the OOF foliage at the BL. Do you think this is a salvageable image?

And thank you John, I will try to see what I can do with the crop.

Dennis:

I think the pose is so good, that I would def. keep the image. Repost is an improvement, looks less manipulated to my eye.

Cheers

Thank you all for your very helpful comments. It seems as though I am getting better at taking pictures, but I still have a bit to learn about post-processing.

I am looking forward to taking my new (used) 1D Mark IV out for a real spin...perhaps in SW Florida this winter. I'm thinking January or February.
