Red-tailed Hawk

Upper Texas Coast

D4, 300, ISO 800, 6.3, 1/5000, road kill quail.

As this hawk mantled it's prey, another Red-tailed Hawk dropped down causing this bird to display it's large bright underwings.

Outstanding capture of this display, Alan. Were you prepared for all the white; did you have to quickly adjust your settings; or did you have to adjust in PP? This must have been a pretty amazing moment just to witness never mind to record.

Alan:

Fantastic wing display with your usual high tech. standards. Perhaps just a bit tight framing wise.

Did you provide the chow?

Cheers

Randy

As Marina put it, it must have been an amazing moment just to witness it, never mind getting a great shot out of it. Fantastic shot, Alan.

Stunning moment. Looks like he's pronouncing: I'm king of the world... Alan: Why ISO 800 and 1/5000th second? Couldn't you have frozen him at half that speed or even less w/ a lower ISO? And how did you keep those whites from blowing?

To answer the exposure questions: I was shooting in manual mode, so I was prepared for whites or bright sky. No adjustment needed.

Hey Gareth, good question. I was shooting flying raptors, so I use those settings to capture the fast action. ISO 800 on a D4 is clean to the eye, so I don't go below that, even with static subjects. I always like having lots of shutter speed in anticipation of action. Exposure question addressed above.

A superb bit of luck, having the other bird drop in. But you certainly took advantage of the situation with your usual superb quality. Thanks for another superb image and the informative feed-back.

I like the sharpness, details, wing position, eye contact and tight composition. Excellent image Alan.

The image is awesome.
The aspect of the image I find most interesting is how round the face looks, almost harrier
like with a facial "disk" like feel....
