Female Anhinga

Taken at Venice rookery in early March. I have a series of these as the bird sunned itself and dried its wings on the near shore of the lake about 10:30 a.m. The bottom half of the bird was hidden behind a large log, hence the composition.

Canon 7D, ISO 640, AV mode, 500 mm f/4L IS, 1/3200 sec. at f/8.0, no flash, PP in Lr 4.2, cropped slightly at top, right, and bottom for composition; some sharpening and NR. I also used the adjustment brush to slightly add saturation to the eye, and to darken feathers just behind the bill. C/C always encouraged.

Very nice portrait with classic pose and excellent detail!
Miss seeing just a little more of the wing/body.
As it is, I might take a sliver off the top.

Dennis, very nice portrait. Since you couldn't get more on the bottom, I would consider cropping a bit off the bottom and leaving the neck and head. It might be a better comp, it might not. Just a thought. You did a nice job of extracting detail from the Anhinga, it's usually pretty hard to do. The detail in the eye is great as well. Nice job!

I guess it all comes down to personal tastes especially with crops, but I find this very pleasing to my eye as it is. Difference in monitors will show variations in black detail, on my screen it looks perfect in the darker regions, but my monitor is not professionally calibrated.

But, liking this image a lot, the fine detail particularly on the raised neck feathers and back light through them is extra nice....and gotta love that wonderful shade of blue in the sky.....excellent.

I like the way the wing joint at lower left adds such strong balance to the crop.
