Karl- very nice pose and capture. The bg is very clean and helps the kingfisher jump out a bit. However, I find the overall image to be quite soft. Did you apply any output sharpening?

Like the uncluttered composition and silky smooth backdrop, like the slightly open beak too....a tad soft as suggested by Miguel and I would suggest a slight darkening of the eye as it looks a little flat and opaque, a couple of minor tweaks in PS would make this very good indeed.

this one came out a bit too soft, especially in the head area. The shutter speed was way too low for 1000mm but there wasn't much you could have done here.

How do you get so close to these guys?
Lovely soft light.
Agree about bird being soft. Did you forget to sharpen?

Thanks, Gail.
I wasn't too close, that's why I elected to switch to 2x converter.
Sharpening? I'm not sure. I will look into again.

I have been playing with one of these myself lately. Beautiful background. It does seem a bit soft and I am wondering if the focal point might have been on the wing?
Hope you get another chance with this guy and can get a higher SS.
