This winter plumage adult Sanderling was photographed at Nickerson Beach on Tuesday afternoon past with the Canon 800mm f/5.6L IS lens and the EOS-1D X. ISO 800. Evaluative metering +1 stop: 1/1000 sec. at f/5.6 in Av mode. Left of center sensor/AI Servo Surround AF active at the moment of exposure. Medium crop from left and below.

Don't be shy; all comments are welcome.

Looks like it's galloping.

Ha! That's awesome. Head angle is spot on.
Explanation for behavior? It does not look like the usual post preening kind of thing....

cool Artie! looks like a trampoline jumper! yes to 1/2000sec instead of 1/1000.

Cool in air photo, I think a bit off the right would look nice.

Hi Artie, love the warm afternoon light, and well timed to capture him in mid 'stride'. Im fine with the placement and comp as is.

The bird is actually running, with both feet off the ground. The image here is the preceding frame. I actually like this one better but posted the odder one.

Agree 100% as there is a bit of motion blur on the head. Should have gone to ISO 1600.... Ah, the benefits of hindsight.

Artie:

If you have a third good frame in the sequence, this would make a fun tryptic.

Cheers

The first one is indeed odd, and even comical but man, the second one does it for me! Thanks for posting it to show us the reason behind the funny pose :-)

Great comp and light. I too greatly prefer the second shot.

2nd one wins hands down here. But I for sure love the first one. Quite an odd and funny pose. :-)

Thanks for the follow up image (even better), and the insight into what was going on.
I've seen many sanderlings "bookin it" down the shoreline, but have yet to see one
high steppin it like this, or as a Peter aptly said "galloping"....very cool. Love how the
camera shows thing the human eye is incapable of seeing.

With 12 fps the 1D X does that better than any camera that I have ever used.
