Ben, would you please id the species for me? I love the pose. You had just about everything working against you as far as the light goes. I'm not the best with flash, but I think exposing for the bg and then lighting the bird up with flash would have balanced things a bit for you here.

Nice low angle, walking pose, HA. BG is very bright and bird is crossing some shadows. Yes, some fill could have helped with that.
