Here's a fun frame from my recent hummingbird shoot up in Santa Fe. The square crop seemed to work well. This is a Broad-tailed female BTW.

Doug:

Very nice, like the touch of purple in background, sharp, well exposed although 1/4 to 1/3 too bright for my personal taste.

The tongue is fun.

Crop works for me because of all the diagonal lines in the image.

Cheers

Hi Doug, great inflight pose, sharp, and I like the splash of colour on her head and underwing. Good to see the tongue, and I like the tucked in feet. The various tones in the BG work well.

Very good sharp detail as usual Doug and nice pose! I like the suggestion of a top light which gives a more natural look and also picks up a little of the iridescence on the back. The varied tones on this BG. work well.

Loving the colors on the BG of this one and that dynamic pose. I would tone down the overall picture just a tad.

Terrific detail. Looks like all areas of the bird have really nice clarity to them - flashes where obviously well positioned. On my monitor the body does seem a bit bright - you know that flash was used. I'd bring down the exposure on the HB just a bit.

Thanks Pete. Are you using a calibrated monitor? If so, what do you have your brightness set to? I've got mine set to 120, and the whites look correct.

Hi Doug,

I hadn't calibrated my monitor for quite a while - just did. That seemed to make a difference - more natural looking, though it wasn't so much the whites specifically that caught my eye before but just the overall exposure.

Great stuff.

Pete
