I photographed this siskin on a perch set up near the bird feeders in my yard. Right now the Pine Siskin is the most abundant species at my feeders and they like both thistle and sunflower and eat with gusto!

Canon 1D Mark IV, Canon 300 f4 L IS, ISO 800, f5, 1/1600, exp. comp. -1/3, used porch railing for support.

Comments and suggestions most appreciated.

Nancy:

Good techs, well exposed, sharp, good comp for this head position. Nice BG.

I do wish that the head didn't merge so much with the body, it doesn't pop quite as well as you would like.

I would consider burning in the perch to reduce its impact, and perhaps using a bit more delicate perch as an option in the future setups.

Cheers

Randy

Hi Nancy,

Nice shot. I liked sharpness, exposure, details and composition. But I agree with Randy about head merge and perch selection. Well done.

Nancy,

Great background and I like your perch. My Siskins (only here in the winter) prefer a heaver perch so maybe hard to get them on something more delicate. I like the pose with the bird looking down with the bird at the top of the 8/12 format. Nice color in the tail and wing.

Great pose from this lovely bird, terrific details in the feathers. One of the many common passerines I've yet to see. I keep missing these little ones...

Sweet shoot Nancy, nicely isolated and lots of detail...personal choice maybe, but possibly crop a little more from the bottom

Nice sharpness and details Nancy, well done. I also like the pose but wish for somewhat thiner perch.

Thank you all for your comments and suggestions. I agree that the bill merging with the body is not ideal and so I will keep taking more photos.
