Shooting at noon isn't the best time for light but it still beats eating lunch in my office. Luckily there was some marine fog in the air to soften the light some. Came across this heron fishing in the surf on the UCSB campus today. It let me crawl to within 30 feet or so and I was able to spend my entire lunch hour watching. I've tried to hold back on the saturation this time as I tend to go overboard.

Technical Bits:
Nikon D80
Nikon 80-200mm 1:2.8 AF-D + 1.4 TC (at 200mm)
ISO 400 f/7.1 1/1000 sec
center weighted metering, no compensation, shutter priority 40% crop

That's a good way to spend your lunch hour. I like the curl of the fish and the way that the heron is holding him...adds tension to the scene. Not crazy for the wave intersecting the back of the bird's head, and I think the bird needs more sharpening. ANy more in the series with the wave different?

Nice soft light and catch. I would do another round of sharpening on the bird.

Most of the other shots have a similar wave in the same position. That was right about where they were breaking today unfortunately. I'll post more later. How's the sharpening on this one? I always forget to resharpen after resizing for web display.

Well caught by heron and photographer!! Nice lighting, detail and composition. Not a bad effort for a lunch-hour activity :D

Second post works for me. I find the rocks a distraction.
